Vietnam Union and the delegation of experts from both countries agree to propose a 160 km conveyor system to transport coal from Laos to Vietnamese seaports.

On 17 May 2023, Vietnam Union Company, the Czech Mining Technology Association – CDT, and Phonesack Group – PSG (Laos) made a working trip and field survey of the La Lay border gate area and My Thuy seaport, Quang Tri.
There, the Czech Mining Technology Association presented the entire technology system and put forward optimal solutions for mining and transporting coal from the Kaleum mine (Laos) to Vietnamese seaports, in order to meet domestic supply and supply to third countries. In addition, the parties exchanged specific information on the current state of mining, reserves and actual supply; from 2021 to the end of March 2023, coal imported through the La Lay border gate reached only 800,000 tonnes.
The delegation of experts from both countries agreed to propose building a 160 km conveyor system to transport 15 to 20 million tonnes of coal per year from Laos to Vietnamese seaports, to meet domestic consumption and to export coal to other countries at a volume of about 20–30 million tonnes per year. At the same time, it would reduce the pressure of road coal transport along National Highway 15D from the La Lay border gate to the seaports, where complex terrain, low-grade roads and many steep passes make transport by heavy vehicles inconvenient.
